What is a tax deduction card?

Everyone who works in Norway must have a tax deduction card.

The tax deduction card is an electronic document that shows how much tax your employer must deduct before the salary is paid to you. The amount that your employer deducts is called a tax deduction or withholding tax.

You will receive information about your tax in a tax deduction notice. You do not have to deliver this to your employer. Your employer obtains your tax card from the Tax Administration electronically by using your Norwegian identity number.

If you are an electronic user, you will be notified by e-mail / mobile when your employer picks up your tax card.

The tax card is valid for one income year (calendar year).

For example: If you work in Norway from 1st November 2018 to 30th March 2019, you will first receive a tax card for the months of November and December 2018 and then a new tax card for the months of January, February and March 2019. If you have not received a new tax deduction notification by January 20th, you should apply for a new tax card.
